Competition and Monopoly in the Federal Reserve System, 19141951: A Microeconomic Approach to Monetary History (Studies in Macroeconomic History) Many economists view competition among central banks as leading to an over-issue of money. This book challenges the conventional wisdom by showing that competition among Federal Reserve banks in the 1920s did not result in an over-issue problem. The US Congress imposed a more monopolistic structure on the Fed in the mid-1930s so that it could accomodate an increase in the revenue needs of the Treasury. This book is unique in emphasizing the evolution of the Fed's structure from a highly competitive one to a highly monopolistic one.

First, do politicians influence monetary policy via Federal Reserve appointments? Second, who influences the process--only the President or the President and the Senate? Third, how is the structure of the Federal Reserve appointment process explained? The study extends the analysis of the Federal Reserve Board to the European Central bank.

Too Big to Fail: The Hazards of Bank Bailouts The potential failure of a large bank presents vexing questions for policymakers. It poses significant risks to other financial institutions, to the financial system as a whole, and possibly to the economic and social order. Failing banks are labeled "too big to fail" (or TBTF). This importantnew book examines the issues surrounding TBTF, explaining why it is a problem and discussing ways of dealing with it more effectively. Gary H. Stern and Ron J. Feldman, officers with the Federal Reserve, warn that not enough has been done to reduce creditors? expectations of TBTF protection. In Lords of Finance, we meet the neurotic and enigmatic Montagu Norman of the Bank of England, the xenophobic and suspicious Emile Moreau of the Banque de France, the arrogant yet brilliant Hjalmar Schacht of the Reichsbank, and Benjamin Strong of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, whose facade of energy and drive masked a...
